🐻‍❄️ Scientists have identified a previously unknown group of polar bears living in an environment with relatively little sea ice, potentially pointing toward a way to preserve some of the species as Arctic sea ice melts.

use sea ice that freezes along the coastlines as their hunting ground to catch seals. But that ice is absent for more than 250 days each year in southeast Greenland.

But this newly discovered group was able to stay put and keep hunting, relying instead on freshwater ice from glaciers. The study's authors say the population offers a window into how some animals might fare as climate change continues to transform the Arctic, where temperatures are increasing"[S]ome polar bears can become established and adapt to this distinctive environment, which, in some areas, may provide a buffer to sea-ice loss," the authors write.

Whether polar bears use sea ice or ice from glaciers, "the general contours of the story are the same — climate change melt and ice retreat," said The pace of ice sheet deterioration will determine whether the population of bears "might do better for a little while" or "end up in jeopardy," Whiteman told Axios. These bears can really shed light on our understanding about the species," Laidre said, "And maybe how other similar areas in Greenland and Svalbard might be really critical to the persistence of polar bears as a species when we lose Arctic sea ice.

Polar Bears in Greenland Adapting to Life Without Sea IceThe animals show the species’ resilience as the climate warms, but some scientists warn that polar bears elsewhere might struggle to survive on freshwater ice. Of course they will survive. They were around during much warmer climates. Because they have done it before… Wasn't it scientists who came up with evolution, adaptation...and all those theories 🤔 so why are they now surprised?

Isolated Greenland polar bear population adapts to climate changeAn isolated population of polar bears in Greenland has made a clever adaptation to the decline in the sea ice they depend upon as a platform for hunting seals, offering a ray of hope for this species in at least some locales in the warming Arctic. Long after the planet goes haywire and younger generations that can’t even fry an egg disappears from a complete lack of adaptation … animals will still roam the earth and survive. But somehow we are the smart ones LOL Talking of Greenland means also mentioning.......

Greenland's polar bears are learning to get around in a less icy worldA newly discovered population of polar bears uses freshwater ice flowing from glaciers for hunting grounds in the warming Arctic. Obligatory: Polar bears need subsidies. If humans are causing loss of habitat to the wild life, perhaps its time to subsidize these bears with food. On land, if a polar bear stumbles on a pod of walruses, in a grapple of the two, a hunter should injure a walrus to give a bear an upper hand.

In a place with little sea ice, polar bears have found another way to huntAn isolated population of polar bears in southeast Greenland has learned to hunt on freshwater glacier ice. That means they may be able to survive longer as climate change makes sea ice scarce.
