Poland's right-wing President Andrzej Duda to face liberal mayor of Warsaw Rafal Trzaskowski in second round of presidential election, exit polls say

President Andrzej Duda addressees supporters shortly after voting ended in the presidential election in Lowicz, Poland on June 28, 2020.

"I will be the candidate of change!" Trzaskowski said at an election night party in a redeveloped former power station in Warsaw. Opinion surveys conducted last week indicated that Duda could have a more difficult time in a runoff given that many opposition voters would be expected to unite against him.

But in Tarnow in southern Poland, a stronghold for the PiS, Andrzej Guzik said he would be voting for Duda because of his consistent leadership. In April, Duda had very high support and was expected then to win in a single round. He was helped by adulatory coverage in state media and the inability of other candidates to campaign.

Exit poll: Duda leads in Poland's presidential electionAn exit poll shows the conservative Polish president, Andrzej Duda, with the most votes in Poland’s presidential election, but short of the 50% required for an outright first-round win. If those results hold a July 12 runoff will be held. It would be rad if people stopped electing conservatives Very good news. As a Pole I'm very satisfied with the outcome thus far. Exit polls show Trzaskowski did poorly in the rual areas that tend to be conservative and catholic. He can't possibly win the election without the support of the Catholic Church. 😁
