Russia's invasion of Ukraine has pulled the possible use of nuclear weapons back into the spotlight.

Poland could be left exposed to Russian attacks, a senior official has warned, after Warsaw said it would host NATO nuclear weapons on its territory to bolster the alliance's Eastern European strength against Moscow. In April, Polish President Andrzej Duda said Warsaw was 'ready' to host NATO nuclear weapons to strengthen the alliance's eastern flank. Russia slammed the comments as 'very dangerous.

Poland, with its proximity to Russia, Belarus and Ukraine, had already exceeded NATO's target of defense spending, dedicating more than two percent of its GDP to the military by 2022. Warsaw has said it will spend four percent of its GDP on defense this year.In June last year, then-Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki indicated Warsaw was interested in NATO's nuclear-sharing program.
