LONDON - Prime Minister Boris Johnson will visit Northern Ireland on Thursday to talk up the strength of union between Britain’s constituent nations and promise a strong rebound from the coronavirus crisis.
Johnson will also meet Ireland’s new prime minister Micheál Martin for the first time since the formation of a new Irish coalition government in June. “As the country begins to get back on its feet in the wake of coronavirus, we cannot simply strive to rebuild, but we must commit to building back stronger than ever,” he said in a statement.
Northern Ireland’s views on leaving the United Kingdom are still largely split along sectarian lines with many Catholics favouring the creation of a united Ireland while pro-British Protestants favour the status quo.Northern Ireland voted 56 to 44% to remain in the European Union in a 2016 Brexit referendum, when the United Kingdom as a whole voted 52 to 48 to leave.
He'll be taking the Scotland to Ireland bridge to get there then.
A day late and a dollar short Boris.
considering the tories very openly betrayed the DUP, the main unionist party, after the DUP backed them up in Westminster, I would take anything he says with a bucket of salt
United Kindom under Boris Johnson is just a lapdog of Trump's USA. What is wrong with the Irish and the Scotish people. They should free themselves from 'Lapdog' UK. UnitedKingdom BorisJohnson Scotland NorthernIreland
In other words: 'Johnson will try to use a band aid to fix the limb he's cut off already' 🙄
That'll be the last bit of Ireland to exit the uk then with Al Johnson's Midas touch. Everything he touches turns to...
Nothing like visiting NI and pushing unity, as in union. Like, it's not a divisive topic at all. johnsonisatwat
Seriously? Didn't the UK just yesterday declare the worst recession on record (COVID+Brexit)? You'd think this doofus would have more pressing issues!
Translation: prepare for reunification
