The Pope is right to endorse same-sex civil unions. These are ordinary people who have the right to love whomever they want and shouldn't be ostracized. Jesus wouldn't want that!
This is the problem with organized religion. He, like any other leader, is expressing his beliefs of how things should be. If you don't like it, too bad. If you're a real Catholic you must do as he says instead of making up your own mind and living a life of acceptance and love

His comments were made as a human being. Not as the Pope. This was not a teaching from the Church.

He said that they are children of God (obvious and true) and that they should not be discriminated against by governments (ie, they can enjoy the benefits of a civil union). He left alone and sacred the sacrament of marriage. This is an entirely overblown reaction.
