In 1878, Leopoldo Carrillo and his wife, Jesusita Suarez de Carrillo, bought the Sosa property and adjoining lots and built the main house, which stands today.
Carrillo was a Sonoran-born merchant who became one of Tucson's most prominent citizens in the late 1800s. Subsequent generations of Carrillo families lived in the house until the late 1960s. The name of John C. Frémont was attached to the home because the one-time Civil War general and Arizona territorial governor rented the house in 1881. Historians are unsure Frémont lived in the house. –The home was slated for demolition to make way for the Tucson Convention Center and Music in the late 1960s. It was one of only two homes in the barrio saved from the wrecking ball.
