Photos show French Sherlock Holmes at world’s 1st police crime lab

Edmond Locard, fondly known as the French Sherlock Holmes, is credited with setting up the world’s first forensic lab in Lyon, France.A huge collection of over 20,000 glass photographic plates was discovered in a garage in the French city of Lyon in 2005. At the time, the authorities did not have the funds to restore the images.

Locard’s mentor, Alphonse Bertillon, invented a method of identifying people using bodily measurements. But when a Jewish army officer was accused of espionage, Bertillon was called upon as a handwriting specialist, even though he had no experience in the field.

The collection of photographic plates from the laboratory lay in the garage of the National Forensic Police Department in Ecully, Lyon, until 2005. Even though they were moved to the city’s municipal archives, a lack of resources meant the plates continued to deteriorate for another decade.
