San Antonio street photographer Erik Gustafson, who captures urban life and architecture, is photographed in downtown San Antonio.Ghostly wisps of neon drift over a nighttime shot of the Aztec Theatre downtown by San Antonio photographer Erik Gustafson, while similarly spectral images of the Alamo, Frost Tower, the Torch of Friendship and the Tower of the Americas morph into a single image like a surreal postcard.
For nearly 15 years, Gustafson has captured downtown life with a vintage Leica M2 and other cameras made before he was born. He then develops the film in his bathroom or a closet light-sealed with towels and blankets, tinkering with multiple exposures and chemicals to craft shots most shutterbugs could only dream of creating in Photoshop.
Sometimes that chase can get a little too up close and personal. The bulk of Gustafson's photos feature either buildings or people who consent to be photographed. But he also has posted pics that skew more toward photojournalism, such as shots of a crusty character being arrested outside Casa Rio and the aftermath of a car accident on Southwest Military Drive where one driver in his crushed vehicle gives Gustafson the stink eye from behind the wheel.
