Pilgrims at a temple, Chandi Temple, Haridwar, Uttarakhand, India. “The swastika in the theater is of Indian origin,” explained Panchevre, who said there are as many as nine light fixtures with the symbol in the Aztec. “It goes back 3,000 years and symbolizes virtue and life and positive energy.” The symbols blend in with the rest of the theater’s vibrantly-colored fixtures, many authentic reproductions of Meso-American artifacts.a show called “A Drag Queen Christmas” outside the theater.
Swastikalike symbols — a cross of four arms bent halfway at a right angle — have been used for centuries by cultures throughout the world. The word itself is derived from the Sanskrit “svastika,” meaning “conducive to well-being” and it is often used to indicate a divinity as well as positive attributes such as strength, luck and good fortune. Because it was co-opted by the Nazi Party in 1920, however, examples of these earlier uses often cause controversy when they come to public attention.
Panchevre said he considered removing the symbols when he purchased the building in 2014, but the theater has been listed in the National Register of Historic Places since 1992, making such changes difficult.
