CHICAGO — Ranger Suárez stepped onto the mound at Guaranteed Rate Field at 1:30 p.m local time on Tuesday, as Bryce Harper stepped into the box. As if on cue, theirteammates emerged. Bryson Stott watched from the top step of the dugout. Relievers Bailey Falter and Connor Brogdon leaned on the railing along the first-base line. Seranthony Domínguez and José Alvarado decided to take two seats behind home plate.
There is no public timeline for Suárez or Harper, so their teammates watched closely, hoping to get a sense of when each might return. Suárez alternated between the left-handed Harper and right-handed Cristian Pache, feeding them 25 pitches in all. Harper hit one hard to the warning track in center field.Harper said Suárez “looked like Ranger” and the eye test seemed to back that up. He located most of his spots.
Suárez said he felt “strong.” He still isn’t sure if he’ll need a rehab assignment, but assumes he will.
