Outages are unlikely to end soon because utilities are liable under California law for wildfire damage caused by their equipment, even if they aren’t negligent

PG&E Corp.’s decision to shut off power to more than two million Californians this week represents a new reality: It now plans to pull the plug as a desperation measure whenever its equipment threatens to spark destructive and potentially deadly wildfires.

Gov. Gavin Newsom reacted with outrage after PG&E plunged swaths of Northern California into darkness, saying that the disruption that ensued shouldn’t happen again.

If one read how the LA homeless housing project is falling behind schedule & how fast the astronomical cost for a living unit there has risen from original estimates, then they'd understand how asinine laws, regulations & guidelines are creating the problems they currently face.

Lars9596 The law is absurd. If the utility is not negligent, it should not be liable.

Summary: Greedy PG&E execs prioritize corporate salaries and payouts over operations and infrastructure.

sheilaaj All it would take to power a house off of solar when the sun is shining is a switch closing the system off from the pole. Just like a ng generator. You need batteries only when the sun goes down. A 1/2 a day is better than none.

This is the future under green energy.

Didn’t PG&E pay out higher dividends to shareholders instead of upgrading their outdated equipment? Isn’t providing power what they signed up for? Isn’t there liability, and ultimately a duty under tort law? PG&E has breeched their duty, resulting in damages from breech.

Couldn’t happen to a more deserving group of people...

California is a third world country.

Yeah, it’s regulation that’s causing the problem, sure.

The law needs to change or these homes need to figure a way to sustain themselves offgrid. Solar + battery.

Thanks for enlightening me !!! California, oay vay !!!

California Law...enough said.

It is time to rethink and redo the grid.
