Pete Hamill, whose love affair with New York inspired a colorful and uniquely influential newspaper career and produced several books of fiction and nonfiction, has died at age 85, his brother says.

FILE - In this June 5, 2007 file photo, Pete Hamill responds during an interview at the Skylight Diner in New York. The longtime New York City newspaper columnist and author has died. His brother Denis Hamill said Pete died Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2020 in Brooklyn.

A Brooklyn-born high school dropout, Hamill was a columnist for the New York Daily News, the New York Post, Newsday, the Village Voice, New York magazine and Esquire. He wrote screenplays, several novels and a bestselling memoir, “A Drinking Life.” Rupert Murdoch eventually purchased the paper, leading to Hamill’s dismissal. A few years later, Hamill spent a short stint as editor-in-chief of the Post’s archrival, the New York Daily News. He also worked for a few months in 1987 as editor of The Mexico City News.

Hamill found his way onto President Richard Nixon’s “enemies list.” In a column, Hamill said the president shared the blame for the 1970 shootings at Kent State University by calling campus dissenters “bums.” Vice President Spiro Agnew called the column “irrational ravings,” and Hamill borrowed the phrase for the title of a 1971 collection of his columns.

This guy was amazing! RIP

And he loved baseball.

It is impossible to overstate the loss suffered to both NYC and Irish-American culture today with the loss of Hamill. I doubt we'll ever get to read someone who understood the city as he did ever again. RIP

He was always the writer I aspired to be. My generation lost a piece of itself today.

RIP Pete

Mr. Hamill also wrote the novel 'Forever' (2003) from which the series 'New Amsterdam' stemmed from. (The one with Nikolaj Coster Waldau about the immortal cop). Lovely novel about immortality and humanity. 🕯️

His mother is turning over in her grave over this bullshit: 'Parents were immigrants from Northern Ireland'.

A New York treasure. RIP sir

They really don’t make columnists like that anymore… Herb Caen, Jimmy Breslin, Bob Green… That type of writing just doesn’t exist anymore

mortgageconsult Pete Hamill epitomized NY. Condolences to his family.

RIP

You were one of the Greats and will be sorely missed. RIP, Pete. 🥀

Sad he's gone and sadder that journalists are only being replaced by dim wits with no nose for the truth.

I loved his books!!

Live long and Prosper sir 😟

I like this Peter Hammill better because you can dance to him, but that doesn’t mean NY Pete won’t be missed.

Can we please stop using the descriptor “legendary”? If somebody is legendary it isn’t needed. If used, it indicates that the person was not legendary.

May he rest in peace

Ammonium Nitrate was the cause of the blast. Apparently it’s been there for years. If not used as as an agrigrow fertilizer why wasn’t it used up?Why was this stored there? The product was used in the Oklahoma explosion? Was this product bring used by terror groups in area?

He looks so young....COVID?

No knowledge Kesha claims to be a theorist of any kind, inventor, blogger, or poet Ive never had any connection to any famous person Nor have I had a 'crush' on any in the last few years Don’t take this the wrong way bc I hate it when anyone seemingly pits one female artist against another...but this is very similar to ToveLo’s song & video for ‘sadder badder cooler’. Tove did it way better imho. Still love Keisha but ‘come on’ haha
