Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg on Monday night advocated a form of national public service for all young adults as a way to create unity among Americans.
"We really want to talk about the threat to social cohesion that helps characterize this presidency but also just this era," the mayor of South Bend, Indiana, told MSNBC's Rachel Maddow. "One thing we could do that would change that would be to make it, if not legally obligatory, but certainly a social norm that anybody after they're 18 spends a year in national service."Buttigieg mentioned that for him as well as several former presidents, including John F.
Buttigieg was vague about what would constitute national service, but both he and Maddow acknowledged it would most likely not be a military draft. Without saying the program would be mandatory, Buttigieg did suggest colleges and employers ask applicants about participation in it. The Indiana mayor said a national service program could be a tool to bridge deepening divisions in American society and increase public participation. Buttigieg mentioned that similar proposals have been made in the past and generally been widely popular. Still, he acknowledged creating such a program could be a long shot.

Already exists through numerous programs, if those programs are going to be consolidated into one program great...but adding a new program will have little to no benefit.

What about service for tax credit. Not a year of anyone’s life - part time. At most a short dedicated training period (say 1-3 months), perhaps in a draft type mode, where room and board is supplied and training is supplied (for a truly useful government job) without tax credit
Trade national service for college or trade school. The wealthy are the ones preventing this from happening.

As many have pointed out AmeriCorps is an organization that does what he is suggesting & includes many programs including Teach for America. Communities in Schools among others. Wondering if he’s not aware of this?

We have multiple national service organizations where diversity can and must lead to teamwork to have any success - it's called the military. Or is he talking about Americorps, which I believe still exists? Or is this a shout back to FDR and his make work programs?
Think we used to call that The Peace Corps. During FDR's Presidency, it was called the Civilian Conservation Corps; they built the Hoover Dam, among other things. Many countries require everyone to serve in the military or another public service outfit.
Following God and obeying His Word will heal our divisions. Dems, nor Pete, want to do that though.

Keeping it Real: I don't even want to entertain this notion until mandatory military service becomes the law of the land. Division will NOT be healed without making hatred, bigotry, discrimination and the like costly to those who perpetuate the same. Believe me!

The last thing this country is in need of are ways in which citizens can volunteer or serve their community. There are currently endless such opportunities that would stand a far greater chance of achieving the supposed goal of coming together than some forced, generic outreach
