People on these devices have constrained living situations lifestyle and learning changes occur. No cell tech, no X-ray machination are to touch the recipient .
Never trust your doctor to know what he or she is talking about.
I think what should be done is to have a mandatory class in highschool that teaches medical terminology and procedures so that the consumer is more informed. Furthermore, anatomy and physiology should also be taught to all students.
My husband is an LVAD patient and he was fully informed before choosing his surgery. It’s been several years now and he is still doing great, active and working full time. He is on the transplant list but his life is so much better with it. This is him
As much as I am teaching students about CS haverfordedu, I am consciously trying to prepare them to evaluate evidence and use critical thinking to assess whether to go forward with such a procedure. I feel this is what a SLAC does best.
As AZG says, many doc don't explain much. They are given little time by clinic management. Some docs quit those practices, seek other positions where they can practice as they are trained. Community Health Centers actually are patient centered. Also may have patient educators.
Our educational system is doing abysmal job educating people about Biology, Anatomy, and Physiology. Who are those subjects are not required for HS? As the result, we have (female) patients who are not sure from which orifice they pee.
These are complex patients to care for whether they are destination or bridge to transplant. Let’s hope for the day when the device is miniaturized and totally implantable with no battery pack or tubes outside the body.
Doctors treat us like kids. Pfft.
I must point out many doctors don't explain anything at all. I know many people (& myself) who have been given a serious diagnosis & then sent out the room. Patient education is not part of what doctors do today, which is not only sad it's a huge liability and almost criminal.
