Andrea and Rob Byron trick or treat with their kids Harvey, 1, and Leo, 5, on Saturday, Oct. 31, 2020 in Sugar House.Halloween moved a mummy-step closer to moving off October 31 and having a permanent date to celebrate in Utah.
On Wednesday, a Senate committee unanimously approved a resolution that will make it so that Halloween is held on the last Friday in October, and not on its usual date on the last night of the month. Oct. 31 would still mark the “official holiday,” but it would now be celebrated on a permanent date.Sen. Kirk Cullimore opened the resolution to help quiet any debate over what days to celebrate Halloween when it falls on a weekday night.
The resolution, which is not legally binding, would not truly be enforceable, but would request that communities hold All-Hallows Eve on the permanent date. “I just think for consistency and it’s a good way to end a week with Halloween celebrations,” Cullimore said in November. “Some people asked why Friday, not Saturday? Friday is because a lot of kids still like to dress up for Halloween on a school day and celebrate at school.”“We can do trick-or-treating and all that on a Friday night and have Saturday to sleep it off,” he said.

This is dumb. Halloween is October 31. That's when we will hand out candy. My jack-o'-lanterns and decorations will be ready that night. If you come by early you will be out of luck.
THIS IS INSANE. Utah lawmakers are worthless utleg utpol
Ah, the good ol Mormons always trying to force people to do what they want. Well all Christians do that 🙄
The moving of Halloween to Oct. 27 is tied to a salary increase for witches, vampires, and goblins.
Good lord, they can’t keep their hands off of anything.
Try and do this with Christmas and see how people react. It's not a holiday created by government. Nobody cares what the 'official' celebration date is.
ah yes...the local govt working on the important things like the homeless issue, child hunger, making our public schools better and more up to date ETC!
They can’t end daylights savings, but they can do this? Utah is the worst.
Ridiculous idea!
There are already Republican legislators talking about criminalizing celebrations other than on their specified date.
This is so stupid. Halloween is Oct 31st and will always be Oct 31st. Geez Utah we have so many other important things to worry about. Only in Utah🙄
Please don't. I work in high school sports and would miss literally every halloween with my kids to be at Friday night football games, rather than just once ever several years. It's not a big deal.
Why are we wasting my tax dollars on this?
What next, 4th of July can’t be celebrated in the middle of the week? Stop getting the government involved and work on issues that actually matter to voters. People can celebrate with their friends when they want, don’t tell the rest of us what to do unless you make it a holiday.
I will just have to keep candy for both days now. That’s the only outcome
UtahGOP less government at work GovCox utah utpol
We paid our government to spend time on this?
Why do we care about Halloween in Janurary-Feburary? Post a cool article, like how local Leon Hall accomplished a lot of city plans without a degree.
Great! I support this. Kids can trick-o-treat on a non school night, families and individuals can do whatever they want on the actual Halloween. No big deal to me to provide candy two nights just in case.
The Friday before Halloween will be known as 'Jerk Day' cause I will be one of the jerks not giving out candy that day.
The amount of control this legislature has over any little thing, even when kids get to play, is disgusting. The myth of republicans believing in smaller Gov is dead and buried. Embarrassing
Um no. Halloween is October 31st. Simple as that.
Simple solution to UtahLeg stupidity. Sign: NO CANDY UNTIL HALLOWEEN Let the Karens of the kids out on the Utah holiday explain the situation to their kids.
I hope the citizens of this great state pay no attention to this, and continue to celebrate Halloween as it’s always been. I will be ready with candy at my house on the actual day of Halloween, thank you.
Hey Mormons. Your kids ain’t getting candy from our house when this rule kicks in. Come on the proper day. Looks like I’ll be giving full candy bars on Sunday Halloweens.
👎🏼 nope utah needs to stop with this nonsense
Don't come to my house and expect anything on Friday. The Mormon government of Utah can't make me celebrate a holiday because it interferes with their church activities. Why don't they try tackling real issues like paying our teachers that have to basically babysit their 9 kids.
Good grief. Why should we police when people celebrate a holiday? It’s not like it’s a holiday from work and school. It’s not costing us anything to leave it!
Halloween (All Hallows eve/samhain) is a religious holiday so this is stupid. You wouldn't move Christmas (yule) or Easter. Utah is definitely the laughing stock the country right now
I'd never make it in Utah Politics. Why, you ask? Simply put, I'm intelligent.
As a school teacher, I support this. Midweek Halloween is the worst…
Nope, if they want candies, my house will have it on hallloween night
I’m so glad they are working on the big issues- 🤡 show
Ugh! I don't want to be giving out candy 2 nights that week! How bout they make Nov.1 a state holiday so everyone can recover after Oct.31? That makes more sense to me.
Make it an actual recognized paid holiday then I'll consider. Otherwise this is dumb. Decades of no problems, then a bunch of boomers and old gen x-ers get a say and it's all downhill.
So trick-or-treating on the last Friday of the month, ward trunk or trunk or treat, city sidewalk, trick-or-treat, and then kids still come on the 31st, how much candy are we supposed to buy?
Seems a lot of Big Government going in lately../
That’s dumb.
The Religouslature needs to stop doing stupid things.
This is great. It resolves a lot of problems with zero down side. The people opposed to this really need to get outside and 'Touch grass.' This is a win-win for kids, parents, teachers... Really everyone.
So what I'm hearing is the legislature wants to turn Halloween into a multi-day celebration, beginning at sundown on the final Friday in October and continuing until sunrise on All Saints Day? Seems a bit unorthodox but I'm certainly willing to try it
Let’s create another reason people make fun of UT.
Please don’t waste taxpayer money to decide when Halloween should be celebrated. Next thing the government will tell us what day Christmas will be celebrated. stayinyourlane
Yeah sorry, I'll be giving out candy on actual Halloween. Unless it's a state holiday and I get the day off, I'll celebrate the holiday on the actual day. People can have their trunk and treats on Friday.
Lol what. That's not how Halloween works.
Unless they're going to make it a state holiday and give everyone PTO, this is none of their business.
What a load of BS. Is there nothing more important to legislate?
What does officially mean?
Full sized candy bars on the 31st, fun sized on the Friday before. Now let’s see when the kids want to celebrate. 🍬 🎃
This is just gonna make the Karen’s bring their kids out on random state Halloween and the rest of the us folks on Halloween- like the entirety of the country.
Halloween is not a government sanctioned holiday. It's a tradition with the next day having religious significance, El Dia de Los Muertos. The state legislature should stick to things in their wheelhouse. We have problems that require government solutions. Stop wasting time.
We give out candy on actual Halloween at our house.
Unfortunately, many people don’t understand that Halloween is All Hallows Even—the evening before All Saints Day, Christian Holiday. Samhain is the Pagan celebration that is the origin of Halloween as we know it.
TWO HALLOWEENS?!?!?!
I would presume that people thought it was stupid, not that they didn't hear about it.
Whatever - I don't give out candy anyway.
Lame.
why on the Friday before and not the Saturday? Oh right, they have to attend church on Sunday and they don't want the kids up late on Saturday. 🙄🙄
Can't force us to celebrate a holiday on a given day.
