Pequea Township residents in Lancaster County are reacting to a resolution preventing the township from becoming a sanctuary area for immigrants lacking permanent legal status . The township board and residents gathered on Wednesday night to discuss how the community would move forward. 'We just want to take our position and make it known that Pequea Township is not a sanctuary city, and nor does it care to be one, ' said Henry Lehman, chairman of the board of supervisors of Pequea Township .
The intensity and passion in the meeting were apparent as people from across the Pequea Township came together to voice their opinions in support of the township not becoming a sanctuary area. The goal was to hear residents’ reactions and to put forth a resolution of support for law enforcement.There were many people at the meeting who raised concerns, not just for the Susquehanna Valley but for the country as a whole, when it comes to immigration policy.'I wanted to do something with our township to protect us from the invasion of criminals that are coming across the border, and coming into our township,' said Pequea resident David Saganich.Although Lancaster city is not a sanctuary city, this meeting comes on the heels of Lancaster City Council passing an ordinance that prevents local police and any city official from inquiring about a person’s immigration status unless by state or federal la
