Roger Penske News

I have written or edited about the auto industry on and off (mostly on) since 1985, first at The Indianapolis Star then, for more than a dozen years, at Bloomberg News in Detroit, followed by almost nine years at SME Media.

IndyCar racing and its owner, 87-year-old Roger Penske , face a huge challenge for what’s supposed to be the magical month of May in Indiana.

Penske owns the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the site of the Indianapolis 500. He also owns the IndyCar series’ leading team, Team Penske.Over Penske’s long career as a race-team owner, the businessman-racer was known for looking for an edge. A major example was in 1994, when Penske’s team took advantage of a rule change that led to an Indy 500 win for Al Unser Jr. That’s par for the course in auto racing.May is the biggest month for IndyCar racing.

IndyCar racing long ago was surpassed by NASCAR racing in terms of U.S. popularity. In recent years, Formula One has invaded the U.S. In the U.S. F1 came to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in the 2000s. F1 retreated for a period but now has multiple non-Indianapolis races in the U.S. In May 2024, the Indy 500, IndyCar racing generally and the Lion in Winter Penske all face big challenges.

The events of the month of May could help determine that outcome. Automakers General Motors Co. and Honda Motor Co. have a stake.
