Former Vice President Mike Pence and former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie did not mince words about frontrunner Donald Trump when the two formally announced their campaigns for the 2024 Republican nomination for president.

FILE - Former Vice President Mike Pence speaks to local residents during a meet and greet, Tuesday, May 23, 2023, in Des Moines, Iowa.

Pence, Trump’s vice president and two-time running mate, returned to a familiar line of rhetoric, attacking his former boss for his much-debated role in the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol, which was called “an attempted coup” by the Select House Committee investigating those day’s events.

“And anyone who asks someone else to put them over the constitution should never be President of the United States again,” he added, not mentioning Trump by name but heavily implying the identity of the “anyone” to be his former commander-in-chief by context clues. "A lonely, self-consumed, self-serving, mirror hog is not a leader,” he said. “So now we have pretenders all around us, who want to tell you ‘pick me, because I’m kind of like what you picked before, but not quite as crazy, but I don’t want to say his name.’ Because for these other pretenders, he is — for those of you who read the Harry Potter books — like Voldemort. He is he who shall not be named.
