calling it a “moral imperative” to prevent Americans from being put out of their homes during a COVID-19 surge.Congress was unable to pass legislation swiftly to extend the ban, which expired at midnight Saturday, and the Democratic leaders said in a statement that it was now up to President Joe Biden’s administration to act. They called on the administration to extend the moratorium through Oct. 18.
“We cannot in good faith blame the Republican Party when House Democrats have a majority,” the progressive congresswoman said on CNN’s “State of the Union.” The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention put the ban in place as part of the COVID-19 response when jobs shifted and many workers lost income. The ban was intended to hold back the spread of the virus among people put out on the streets and into shelters.
Brian Deese, director of the White House National Economic Council, appeared on “Fox News Sunday” to echo that sentiment. “No landlord should evict without seeking that rental assistance, and states and localities need to get that money out urgently, and they can do that,” Deese said.
MichiganPPC This is why support money for people should go directly TO THE PEOPLE. they’d pay their rent, duh. But noooo Democrats want to be everybody’s nanny and GOP like to mess with Democrats so here we are, billions of our tax $ sitting while folks get unhoused.
Each state was issued the money for rents, can maybe each states reps or senators give their state gov a call to hurry up the disbursement of the funds.
Extending the moratorium will only make ending it later worse.
Get a job as pay your own rent. I do
I’m so glad I sold my rental property last year, I just couldn’t deal with this shit.
mchovden1785 Doesn't Congress have to do that?
There were Billions of dollars available for rental assistance that people didn’t use. Why? If you didn’t take advantage of those you deserve to be evicted.
How about everyone just goes back to work
'Anger mounts' I think people are not yet angry enough to protest
They should have been talking up forgetful Joe, long before this, since it already expired Saturday,
has any other State Extended the rent/mortgage moratorium beyond August 1, besides California? Delta doesnt need outdoor fuel! now does it? politically BAD OPTICS - besides inhumane PERIOD
YES!! i paid off my house early 5yrs ago as it happens/ cant imagine being in a pandenic & like some ppl having an Economic burden adding to my fears Gov.Newsom tk u for extending CA's till Sept I look forward to you extending the moratorium be-cause of Delta as needed
Honestly what have they done since being there? They impeached a guy who was already gone. They passed the stimulus he wanted to pass months earlier. Besides that they've done nothing and don't care.
Housing, like education and health care, should be a human right.Republicans believe that ensuring they have someone else to look down on is more important than humanity.
Happened all over. Didn’t pay rent while keeping their job and saving enough money to buy a house Landlords lose
What about the people they owe the rent to? They have a mortgage to pay, bills etc it’s insane to keep this going
Hot potato, hot potato!
yea right and the new wave is from the unvaccinated nah bad move!! They ass need to get back to work like the rest of us jobs been hiring for months now
This was a bad idea from the beginning. There should have been a temporary rent assistance program for those not collecting unemployment that went directly to landlords.
Im not even sure how this is legal.
Democrats snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, as usual.
When are people going to realize it’s not sustainable 🤦♂️
What you mean to say is SpeakerPelosi let the eviction moratorium expired and instead of calling a vote, HouseDemocrats went on vacation and she's now blamed Republicans and the CDC when it's *the Democrats' fault' for at least not bringing this to the floor before fucking off.
Just to be clear, An Extension of eviction moratorium doesn’t mean that people don’t owe that money. It simply accrues. I say that because I bet you there are people who think this means they are off the hook.
It's my understanding Congress or the CDC has to do this.
Mental joi Biden very rich very good food very NYC tea very NYC breakfast lunch dinner home the white house 🏠 nonsense looks middle class and poor people no home no breakfast lunch dinner nonsense joi Biden prime Minister
Time to pay rent
Just wondering. Is there some point where the people are listened to by the Democratic party. We are not ok ing all the wasteful spending. People should be paying their bills by now. You have them enough money to.
Actually, the money for the landlords and tenets was in the bill they passed. They need to get on the states and localities for not distributing the funds. Congress done their part. The tenets and landlords should’ve been screaming at the states for their lack of urgency.
Congress knew moratorium had a fixed expiration date and millions of evictions were inevitable. Many now have bad credit & rental records with back rent, thru no fault of their own. Who would rent to them? Why were no plans made to deal with this from outset? Terrible planning.
Strong tenant laws are what's needed. Not an eviction moratorium. I love NY.
They have smooched long enough. Pay the landlords (who desperately need the money) or get out. Don’t have the money…GET A JOB!!
How long are they going to keep this in place, think of the person that owns the home and has to make mortgage payments
Student loans, girl of generational wealth.
No !! It’s time to pay the piper !! They have lived off the bank or landlord long enough. They have bills to pay, too !!
The majority party in the House Refuses to take action, just like the Democrats in the Senate, the Democrat President Biden also refuses to take action. All 3 blame the GOP.
Simply “extending” this isn’t the answer …. at some point …. you’ve gotta deal with the fact that tenants are behind on the rent …. at least 6 million people don’t make enough money to actually catch up …. so what’s the plan
Extend it for what? It should have stopped months ago. The back rent still is owed. The majority not paying rent have no intention of ever paying rent. Meanwhile property owners are still paying mortgages and property taxes.
