Men must lend their voices to the effort to end the plague of domestic violence in Bexar County. Here, people with the P.E.A.C.E. Initiative protest in 2019.This is for the men of San Antonio who may not be aware of an epidemic that is affecting San Antonio’s mothers, sisters and daughters — the domestic violence crisis.
It’s not OK that men of conscience have been mostly absent from this conversation. Men of conscience must inform other men that domestic violence leaves permanent physical, psychological and economic scars on the entire family, and on future generations. Boys who witness domestic violence in their homes have a high likelihood of growing up to be abusers. Girls who grow up in these homes are more likely to become victims.
We need to live up to our obligations as fathers, brothers, neighbors and community leaders. We need to step up and hold other men accountable. We need to educate our brothers and sons, and remind them that compassion, decency and kindness are hallmarks of strength, not weakness.• Join forces with the people who have been working to eradicate domestic violence. Donate money or volunteer your time at local domestic violence shelters and nonprofits like the Battered Women & Children’s Shelter.
