A new behind-the-scenes image shows members of the Peacemaker cast on set. The upcoming HBO Max series from director James Gunn is a spinoff from his recent DC movie The Suicide Squad. The film, which premiered in the US in August 2021, depicted the return of a newly assembled Task Force X as they attempt to destroy a giant alien starfish called Starro.
Focusing on Cena’s character, the new eight-episode spinoff show Peacemaker explores the anti-hero's life following the events of The Suicide Squad, and reveals more about his origin story. Gunn reportedly began developing Peacemaker during lockdown in 2020. HBO Max gave a straight to series order for the show later that year, with Gunn attached to direct five episodes and Jody Hill, Rosemary Rodriguez and Brad Anderson enlisted to helm a further three.
After the premiere of its new red-band trailer, fans should certainly expect to see a heap of Gunn's style of comedy. With his ever-growing record of highly comedic superhero pictures, it seems unlikely that Gunn or the studio will seek to stray away from his popular MO as they venture into the realm of television.
