Pauly Shore has shared his reaction to the fact that his vocal performance in Pinocchio: A True Story went viral. The film, which became available on VOD and home video on March 22, 2022, was originally a Russian animated film that was redubbed and distributed by Lionsgate in the U.S. The film, which is a new adaptation of the classic Italian children's novel The Adventures of Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi, also features the voices of Tom Kenny and Jon Heder.
The trailer for Pinocchio: A True Story went viral this winter when Twitter users shared a clip of the opening moments. Although the animation style is clearly low budget, it looks exactly like what those who are familiar with direct-to-video animation might expect, as"Jepetto" puts together the wooden puppet Pinocchio and he comes to life.
Part of the reason the video went viral in the first place was the discovery that Shore, who is now 54 years old, was chosen to play the young puppet boy in the first place. The role certainly seems more suited for the actor at the beginning of his career when he played high school students in films like 1992's Encino Man. Those early roles, which also include 1993's Son-in-Law and 1996's Bio-Dome remain the actor's best known works.
The viral moment almost certainly helped Pinocchio: A True Story sell a few more copies than it would have otherwise. However, as it didn't get a theatrical release, it's difficult to discern whether or not that was the case. Regardless, the fact that Shore is so open to the meme-ification of his work speaks well of his sense of humor about himself and his celebrity, which he has previously shown by directing the bizarre 2003 documentary Pauly Shore Is Dead.
