The interaction occurred after the show, when LuPone — who stars in the musical as Joanne — appeared with the rest of her cast in a post-show Q&A hosted and filmed by the American Theater Wing. During the Q&A, LuPone called out a patron who wasn’t wearing a mask properly. Currently, the Broadway League’s COVID safety protocols requires all audience members to wear a mask inside theaters through at least May 31.
“Put your mask on over your nose, that is the rule,” LuPone says in a viral Twitter video. “That’s why you are in the theater, that is the rule. If you don’t want to follow the rule, get the fuck out!” After applause from the rest of the audience, LuPone continued. “I’m serious. Who do you think you are, if you do not respect the people that are sitting around you?”
After a woman in the audience told LuPone “I pay your salary,” LuPone responded by telling her “You pay my salary? Bullshit. Chris Harper pays my salary,” referring to the producer of “Company.” “Who do you think you are? Just put your mask over your nose.”

It’s kind of funny she says no one talks about American culture, because from a non-US person it seems American culture is incredibly prevalent in media (especially movies and social media) It may have a different context in theatre though
It started when theatre owners started selling concessions like the movies and you had to sit thru dramas with ice and straws reverberating in the darkness.

I understand what she’s saying. But the type of shoes she’s talking abt are the shows that bring in audiences and revenue from tourists. They want to see Alladin or The Lion King. Look at the reaction when Beetlejuice closed. For us in NYC we see the shows we love close fast.
I'd love for folks like Ms. LuPone to take their talents to regional theatres producing new work and/or uncommon revivals. For many, a trip to 'Broadway' is too expensive. But, driving a few hours to insert midsized city here and staying the night won't break the bank.
Very few performances I attend now now where people don't text during, or only silence so the phone wakes up constantly or vibrates. Eating and drinking like it's the cinema? Talking throughout? Turn your phones off. Close your mouths & enjoy what you've paid to see. Thanks.

She's entitled to her opinions, however what many people seem to love about her I see as being a dismissive, rude, condescending, egotistical, judgemental bully.
I’d like her to expand on “dumbed down” in this context. Does she mean rude? Yes, public audiences are all awful now. But does she mean shows like Hamilton that have exposed the thrill of live performance to new and diverse audiences? Also, what does the union have to do with it?
Maybe it’s the result of Broadway’s model the past few decades: turning mediocre movies into even more middling musicals. Not exactly pushing the envelope artistically, folks. Ask more of audiences. The shows that do seem to get rewarded.
