TEMPE, Ariz. — Left-hander Patrick Sandoval is expecting his World Baseball Classic experience to pay dividends for him with the Angels.
Sandoval’s two starts for Mexico were against Team USA and Japan, the teams that met in the finals. Both games were sold out. Sandoval gave up one run in 7 1/3 innings, beating the USA and taking a no-decision against Japan. Sandoval struck out Mike Trout and walked him. Sandoval struck out Shohei Ohtani and got him on a lineout. He said Friday that there were no trash-talking texts going back and forth among the WBC participants during the tournament.Sandoval is already looking forward to playing in the WBC again in 2023, and he said he plans to again play for Mexico.
Sandoval said he felt some resentment that he had not been invited to play for the USA this time, but that left him quickly.
