Nellie Partow’s label is eight years old, placing it somewhere between an upstart and an establishment brand. But in the post-internet fashion industry, a lot can happen in under a decade. Partow’s early collections were premised on reworking masculine tailoring for women, for instance, but in 2019 there’s no need to call it masculine or menswear inspired. It’s just a great suit, an excellent shirt, a well-cut trouser.
Partow’s new suit for pre-fall was composed of her best-selling trousers—mid-rise, straight leg—and a new, strong-shouldered blazer with an elongated body. She was quick to point out its meticulous interior construction, all done by hand in Italy. The quality of her tailoring improves every season and is on par with that of The Row, Jil Sander, and other luxe-minimalist peers.
Of course, it isn’t all tailoring at Partow. Her new drapey, hand-twisted satin blouses will appeal to women looking for something a bit softer, and she reined in the proportions of her dresses for more body-conscious, waist-defining silhouettes. A burnt orange, long-sleeve frock with topstitching along the seams had a dress-up-or-down ease that wasn’t always to be found in the more oversized, esoteric shapes.
