Why did you want to leave NYFW this season and move your show to Paris?
I started my career in Paris; I lived there, showed my first 10 runway show collections there and returned [after moving my show to New York] for my label’s 10 year anniversary, continuing to show in the City of Light for another five years after that. Paris is truly a defining part of my story. Throughout my career, all my moves have been intuitive, I felt like it was time for that paradigm to switch again.
Looking back at the shows I’ve done in Paris, they are an important part of my journey and hold great emotional significance in my heart as each one built a part of my narrative as I am nearing my 25 year anniversary. Did you feel a shift in your creativity when you first came to NYFW from Paris? Do you anticipate a similar shift going back to Paris?
I am always very affected by the location in which I’m showing a collection. I don’t mean just the venue but also the city. There are different vibes that inspire and ignite my creativity. Some collections feel like they make better sense in one context versus another, and this is certainly the case for this collection. I’m one of the only designers who has shown collections in Paris, New York, London, and Milan, not to mention Los Angeles on numerous occasions.
