In the later period of the pandemic, the researchers noted significant declines in the traits that help us navigate social situations, trust others, think creatively, and act responsibly. These changes were especially pronounced among young adults.
"Younger individuals have less resources, they're less established in their social context, in their jobs and friends," he says."So any sort of disruption, they're the ones that are going to have this fewer number of resources to ride out the storm." The study authors concur, writing that high conscientiousness is associated with higher educational achievement and income and lower risk of chronic diseases. Neuroticism is linked with risky health behaviors and poor mental health. The personality changes documented were not huge, but they were equal to the typical amount of personality change normally found in a decade of life, and they were seen across race and education level.
With a personality shift across population in these areas,"there's going to be a slight elevation of some of the negative outcomes ... predominantly related to mental health and health," Roberts says. The study had some limitations. For one thing, it didn't have a control group to compare results — there wasn't a group of people who didn't live through the pandemic for comparison in this case. And Roberts says it's hard to tease out what, exactly, over the past few years had the biggest impact on these shifts in personality.
Well, on the upside, if we’re 10 years wiser in just two years… We’ll know on November 8 VoteBlueToSaveAmerica
A couple areas of further study: this survey did not attempt to find causation - what factors are at play for various demographics? Also, an opportunity for long term case studies for young adults.
After 6 yrs of trump and his bs anyone could be wacked out
The stress wasn't from the pandemic. It was from all the a-holes who fought about it and all the safety measures and put everyone at risk. We are a nation of spoiled brats.
maggieNYT This era changed me for sure. The pandemic, Trump, and the fight for democracy changed me forever.
maggieNYT In other words, we’ve all aged 10 years over the past 2 years.
It wasn’t the pandemic, it was the overbearing government response. Get your facts right.
Imagine the stress people experienced during wars. This pandemic stress is a 1st world problem. Don't be so weak, grow a pair of balls.
maggieNYT Make sure you read as far as the caveats near the end
It wasn't the virus that caused the stress,it was the Democrat Party.
Stress of the pandemic? Much more effected by progressive abuse.
My group would hangout everyday and kept living with no traffic and getting food from our favorite places in the City with no issues together by noon but had to be home for dinner by 8 it was wonderful we enjoyed it
It wasn’t just the pandemic. We saw George Floyd other people die tragic deaths, Mass shootings, democracy crumble, Putin invade Ukraine, because we were a captive audience.
Mass psychosis propagated by a well orchestrated media narrative of fear designed by burrocrats and especially Governors with emergency powers. Never again.
Absolutely. I was so sickened by the selfish, childish, cultish reaction to the global pandemic by far too many Americans and it has changed me forever. I definitely aged at least 10 years in the past 2.5 years. Get off my lawn...
Clearly
I know it has on mine.
Don't we also need to look at other factors for this shift, such as the political climate, etc that were happening at the same time?
And your reporting only made things worse.
Yes we tried to tell people about the significant psychological issues stemming from the Pandemic & how it was handled but we were called anti vaxxers.
