PCB officials discuss recent water deaths

BAY COUNTY, Fla. - After the six deaths of people who were swimming in the Gulf of Mexico, questions are being raised on what can be done to lower those deaths.

“A lifeguard is never too far from you,” Morgan said. “But seeing the amount of people that we have and the large beach that we cover, we just can’t have a lifeguard at every few feet. It’s just not possible.”“We have 16 lifeguards, that includes myself,” Panama City Beach Beach Safety Director Daryl Paul said. “Nine of those are permanent year-round lifeguards and then we have seasonals to help bolster our staffing a little bit.

Despite the current lifeguards working to prevent these tragedies, Panama City Beach Mayor Stuart Tettemer said more lifeguards are needed. He said the city is looking to beach establishments to help with the costs of getting more money to help the city fund getting more lifeguards on the beaches.
