PALOS VERDES ESTATES >> The Palos Verdes baseball team was in a familiar position in Thursday’s CIF-Southern Section Division 2 first-round game against Calabasas. However, PV didn’t panic and eventually rallied for five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a three-run lead and their bullpen and defense made it stand up for a 6-5 win.
“As a team we came together and didn’t get down,” Palos Verdes junior Grant Govel said. “We knew we just had to start hitting. It’s been a heck of a time this year as we have been in this position before so we have a lot of dugout experience and we knew we could come back.” Later in the inning, Luke Martoccia gave PV its first lead with a looping single to right field that Coyotes’ Sam Grunberg made a diving attempt to catch, but he trapped the ball which allowed Owen Park to score to make 4-3 and allowed Govel to move to third. That was key as Calabasas reliever Peter Lynch would uncork a wild pitch and Govel hustled home sliding under the tag of Lynch to make it 5-3 PV.
