Sean Manaea was surprised when he looked at the video board at Petco Park before the start of Tuesday’s game against the Brewers and saw how much Corbin Burnes had pitched already. No Padres starter will have 10 starts until Darvish pitches Wednesday in St. Louis. The top three Padres starters are being relied on to do a lot. But not too much. They’re going deep in games. Deeper, by and large, than any other team’s starters. But they’re also getting a lot of time between the games they pitch.
But sticking with a six-man rotation now — and perhaps through much or all of a stretch in which they are playing 31 games in 31 days — is a luxury the Padres have and a strategy they are employing. Clevinger, who made three starts this month after coming back from his 2020 Tommy John surgery and a knee sprain he incurred during spring training, is expected to return from his current triceps sprain June 5 against Milwaukee.“We’ve got Clev coming back,” Melvin said. “We’ve got to make some decisions there. It’s not going to be a seven-man rotation.”
THAT IS WHAT YOU WANT FROM YOUR STARTERS-GOOD JOB.
