With Nos. 4 and 5 starters Mike Clevinger and Sean Manaea getting rocked by Phillies, Padres turn to ace Yu Darvish against Phillies' No. 1 Zack Wheeler

Clevinger did not record an out, Sean Manaea fumbled the hand-off from Nick Martinez and now they’ll turn to Yu Darvish in a must-win game — which would be followed by two more must-wins if the Padres are to advance to their first World Series since 1998.A three-game winning streak will have to begin at a sold-out Citizens Bank Park expecting a clinching celebration from their 87-win team.“We have Yu on the mound,” Padres manager Bob Melvin said.

The effort was in vain because Manaea followed him into the game — his first appearance since Oct. 4 — and allowed five runs on four hits and two walks in 1 1/3 innings, the back-breaking runs crossing the plate on Rhys Hoskins’ game-tying homer and Harper’s RBI double. That brought pitching coach Ruben Niebla to the mound as Martinez scrambled into action in the center field bullpen.
