It is likely with all this in mind that Machado his hitting lower than fourth on Friday for just the second time since 2015. Granted he’s moving down just one spot — to the five-hole as the third baseman — to start a four-game series against the Braves, but he’s been the Padres’ clean-up hitter through thick and thin this season. Machado is hitting .
Beyond those two hitters, left fielder Jurickson Profar will bat third, pushing Jake Cronenworth to the clean-up spot, his only start this year out of the three-hole. Second baseman Xander Bogaerts will bat sixth, followed by center fielder Jackson Merrill, shortstop Ha-Seong Kim and catcher Kyle Higashikoa, who is knuckleballer Matt Waldron’s go-to target. The Padres will be hoping to change their left-handed luck this series as they will face Fried on Friday and Chris Sale on Monday.
