Second baseman Ha-Seong Kim felt tightness in his left hamstring Thursday and was held out of the lineup for Friday’s series opener against the Reds.
“With the day game tomorrow and two lefties , it’s more about making sure we don’t get this thing a little bit worse,” Padres manager Bob Melvin said. “I think he could also show up today but it got to a point yesterday where it was a little bit uncomfortable for him and with a quick turnaround tomorrow, we feel like we can get past if we give him tonight hopefully the whole game off.”Kim leads the Padres or is tied for the lead in almost every offensive category over the past 14 games.
Rougned Odor, who bats left-handed and was 1-for-2 with a run scored Thursday while starting in right field, started in Kim’s place Friday as the Padres faced right-hander Graham Ashcraft.Michael Wacha felt good a day after throwing in the bullpen and is expected to start Saturday against the Reds. Yu Darvish threw his between-starts bullpen session said he felt good. He said he is essentially fully recovered from the flu, but the Padres have not determined for sure that he will start Sunday’s series finale here.
It appears likely left-handed reliever Tom Cosgrove, on the injured list with a left hamstring strain, rejoins the Padres this weekend.
