Good morning from Atlanta, Mike Shildt did something a lot of managers say they are willing to do but seldom actually do. Robert Suarez agreed to it, which not every closer would. You can read in my game story about the Padres’ 3-1 victory over the Braves and how Shildt used Suarez in the eighth inning to get through the top of the Braves’ order before turning to Jeremiah Estrada in the ninth. We’ll dive into Shildt’s decision more and talk about Suarez’s approach to his role.

One of the game’s most crucial moments came in the first inning. Waldron had yielded a single and a double to the Braves’ first two hitters and was about to face Marcell Ozuna, who at that moment led the major leagues in RBI and was ranked second in OPS and home runs. Waldron got ahead with a knuckleball that Ozuna fouled off, threw a knuckleball in the dirt and then got two more strikes with his fastball. “He's a very aggressive hitter,” Waldron said. “I just stick to my approach.
