Catching coach Brian Esposito, who served as manager at Single-A Fort Wayne last year, and assistant hitting coach Oscar Bernard, who spent the past seven seasons as the Padres’ minor league hitting coordinator, were the only coaches not previously known.Michael Brdar, the hitting coach in 2022, left for Detroit. The Padres let go of catching coach Francisco Cervelli in November.
Ryan Flaherty, previously a quality control coach, has assumed the title of bench coach and offensive coordinator, overseeing hitting instruction along with Coolbaugh and Bernard. Former Cardinals manager Mike Shildt returns with a new title, as a senior advisor in the player development department and the major league staff. Shildt was officially a consultant last year but also spent time coaching third base, first base and as bench coach due to illnesses on the staff.
Ryan Christenson, who served as manager Bob Melvin’s bench coach last season, as assumed the title of associate manager. The other returning members of the staff are pitching coach Ruben Niebla, third base coach and infield instructor Matt Williams, first base coach and outfield instructor David Macias, game planning coaching assistant Peter Summerville, bullpen catcher and coaching assistant Heberto Andrade and Bryan Price as a senior advisor to the staff.
