JERSEY SHORE – One of two Geisinger hospitals in Lycoming County has stopped performing emergency surgery due to the lack of need.
The monthly number of people requiring such surgery at Geisinger Jersey Shore Hospital typically ranged from zero to four, said Deborah Sawyer, a spokesperson for the health system based in the Danville area. Those in need of emergency surgery will be stabilized and taken either the Geisinger Medical Center Muncy, also in the county, that opened in January or to the most appropriate local acute hospital, she said. UPMC has hospitals in Williamsport and Muncy.
The state Health Department granted the hospital a surgical emergency care exception, she said. Elective surge will continue and there will be no impact on staffing, Sawyer said. She cited appendectomies as a type of emergency surgery no longer performed at Geisinger Jersey Shore.
