The Seattle City Attorney's Office wants to crack down on illegal street racing.

City Attorney Ann Davison introduced legislation to the Seattle City Council Tuesday that would adopt a new state law expanding the definition of street racing to include drifting and street-takeover events. It would also establish a $500 civil infraction against the registered owner of vehicles participating in these types of events in Seattle .

The bill is being sponsored by Seattle City Councilmember Bob Kettle, who said it's time to take this crime from a simple infraction and to give police more leverage to deal with this public safety threat.“We've been working with SPD on the executive side, the City Attorney’s Office on the judicial side and us on the legislative side, bringing all the pieces together,” Kettle said. “It's about bringing responsibility and accountability. This is not some innocent thing.

Additionally, people who help organize or take part in an illegal street race could also be charged with aiding and abetting.
