The owner of Houston's only lesbian bar says the state's ongoing push against drag performances could put her liquor license — and thus her business — at risk.
Senate Bill 12, the chief bill seeking to crack down on drag performances in Texas, would bar municipalities from authorizing drag shows, which it defines as"sexually oriented performances," on public property or where children are present. The bill passed the Texas Senate last month and was being considered in a House committee Wednesday, drawing a number of protesters to Austin and spurring Mabry to post about the consequence of the state's anti-drag push.
"Last year Pearl grossed more in sales than MANY of the clubs in our city," Mabry wrote on Instagram."We paid over $300k in TABC & Sales Tax, alone! That’s a lot of revenue for the state, isn’t it? We are just a little ole’ lesbian bar that hosts drag shows, drag bingo & so on.", Pearl is one of fewer than 30 lesbian bars in the United States.
