Dallas Morning News EditorialIn the Democratic primary for state House District 33, voters have a choice between two young, first-time candidates who are running to bring the perspectives of under-25 Texans to the Legislature. And while their inexperience is a concern, our recommendation goes to Peter Haase, a semiconductor engineer from Richardson, over Graeson Lynsky, a full-time student at the University of Oklahoma.
Haase, 23, says politicians should better represent “those of us who are not millionaires, who live in apartments and who work normal jobs,” especially “my peers and my community as someone who is in touch with the younger generations and their struggles.” Haase says his top priorities are to improve Texas’ infrastructure, energy grid and affordable housing options. He also supports abortion rights, environmental conservation, Medicaid eligibility expansion and affordable health care.
Lynsky, 21, a drama and political science student who is set to graduate in 2023, says he wants to fix the power grid, end restrictive laws governing voting and reproductive health care and provide aid to small businesses harmed by the pandemic.
Texas House District 33 includes all of Rockwall County and a portion of Collin County, and the district is traditionally a Republican stronghold. The winner of this contest will face a Republican candidate in the general election in November.
