Our democracy isn’t perfect, but what’s the alternative, dictatorship?

After discussions with Donald Trump , Steve Bannon told a group from China “before” the 2020 election, “He’s going to declare victory, but that doesn’t mean he’s the winner, he’s just going to ‘say’ he’s the winner. He’s going to sit right there and say they stole it.” Trump is successful telling lies to Americans because he believes that if you keep telling the same lie, many people will eventually believe you.

Of course, the most egregious thing he is guilty of is January 6. The attack on our Capitol would never have happened if he admitted losing a fair election. How can any American support Trump and at the same time fly an American flag which represents our free democracy. It’s a contradiction! Every educated American with some common sense must know that a free democratic society that abandons the truth and the rule of law cannot remain a free democracy.

Unfortunately, in many countries throughout the world, far-right conservative, populist parties have been successful in winning high offices. They know that many voters are not happy with how their democratic government is working, so they promise to improve things by taking power away from “crooked” judges and by eliminating prejudiced media, like certain newspapers. This is true in Hungary, Poland, Turkey, Serbia, Brazil, Bangladesh and a few others.

Our democracy is not perfect. But what is the alternative? Putin’s Russia or Kim Jong Un’s North Korea.
