The planet could use a break

In 1950, women were having an average of 4.7 children in their lifetime, driving an unprecedented population explosion around the world.

And as you can see by this chart from Max Roser’s Our World in Data blog, there will be long-term implications. “To provide space, food, and resources for a large world population in a way that is sustainable into the distant future is without question one of the large, serious challenges for our generation,” Roser wrote, pointing out that when it finally slows, population will have risen 10-fold over the span of 250 years.

While there will certainly be benefits to a stabilized population, the shifting demographic will obviously bring its own set of challenges. The U.N. says that, by 2050, one in six will be over the age of 65 from the current figure of one in 11.
