Oscar Shakes Up Best Picture Eligibility Standards; Strict New Diversity Requirements Take Full Effect In 2024

in 2024. In its most dramatic swing towards true diversity, Oscar is laying down significant requirements in order to be eligible for Hollywood’s most sought-after prize: Best Picture.

Long relying on the industry itself to make diversity a significant part of the way they make movies, the Academy is now taking action on its own to make sure Oscar-starved filmmakers get the message. It is a key sea change for an organization that had resisted imposing specific moviemaking rules on the industry, but rather like Chauncey Gardiner injust liked “to watch”, but that was then and this is now.

“The aperture must widen to reflect our diverse global population in both the creation of motion pictures and in the audiences who connect with them. The Academy is committed to playing a vital role in helping make this a reality,” said Academy President David Rubin and Academy CEO Dawn Hudson. “We believe these inclusion standards will be a catalyst for long-lasting, essential change in our industry.

This is a mistake as it clearly forces diversity over hard work. Plus how can we « verify » who is really a member of the LGBT+ community or if someone is Hispanic or Middle Eastern. In my opinion, it separates communities instead of bringing people together as movies do...TBD

Does anybody notice that the Academy has cherry-picked their favorite minorities? What about older Americans or Muslims or those with weight problems? I understand the good intentions but this is not the solution. I hope this doesn’t hurt Biden.

This is limiting art and creators. It's insane.

Films made by white heterosexuals ABOUT white heterosexuals are now ineligible for Academy Awards? How is this not bigotry defined?

Just end the Oscars already, it's better than putting stipulations on an artform, no matter how noble the intentions.
