In the COVID era, we have been forced to rethink everything. And with home viewing becoming even more dominant as cinemas closed, the question has arisen: What exactly is a movie?

Pundits and industryites focused this debate on streaming vs. cinemas. But artists see things that most people overlook, so, “What is cinema?,” which is not the same question at all.

Our relationship with movies has changed. Under corporate owners, studios started seeing movies as “content,” and so have audiences. When we bookmark a want-to-see film, our streaming service or website uses algorithms to suggest other similar titles. A movie becomes just another entry in our check-off list.began to report box office figures early in the 20th century; as a trade paper, we always addressed budgets, B.O. tallies and ancillaries.

The Academy Awards have always offered curation. Oscar voters are saying, “Out of hundreds of movies this year, these are especially worthwhile.” We are the most over-entertained people in the history of the world, so how do we cope with the endless glut of films at our disposal? In a 2019 New York Times column, Scorsese lamented how “modern film franchises [are] market-researched, audience-tested, vetted, modified, revetted and remodified until they’re ready for consumption.”

In 1999, Steven Soderbergh wrote, “There’s been a shift, in that people who make dumb movies that make a lot of money are now treated with the kind of respect that used to be reserved for people who made good movies … crassness has been completely embraced.”

Movies are fine as long as they dont turn into tacky productions like fast and furious.

According to the Oscars for a movie to be art it now must not be made by someone with no blemish on their person and it must have so and so many members of certain chosen minorities or it's not award worthy art. The article fails to bring this obvious problem up.

Good piece, and the end is on point (see pic). Art survives because of itself; If you can feel something when watching, it's worked. I wrote a more general piece entitled 'What is art in today's digital age?' some time ago :

Wow 😳

Movie is short for moving picture, any visual story that moves.

I want them to be good.

A movie is motion pictures on a big screen in a theater. Nothing else.

Stop trying to be propaganda & left leaning educational garbage. Art with content is called entertainment that provides an escape from reality for short moments in time. That's the real Motion Picture Industry

I hate this shit. Between theaters and streaming there’s more than enough room for all of it. Gravitate to what YOU like. Let everyone else enjoy what they like and leave gate keeping for all the losers. Besides, You can enjoy artsy AND franchise flicks if you want.

Art!

I like to go to the movies for the whole experience!! Big screen love it!! Other people’s reactions to the movie!! 👏👏👏👏💜💜💜
