Original ‘Harry Potter’ item fetches nearly $2M at record-breaking auction

The watercolor artwork used on the cover of the first book in J.K. Rowling's "Harry Potter" series, "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone," sold at auction Wednesday, June 26, for nearly $2 million.NEW YORK – The original illustration for the cover of the original book in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series sold Wednesday for a record-breaking $1.9 million.

It took nearly 10 minutes for the four-way bidding to conclude in New York on Wednesday, Sotheby’s told CNN. The image was used on the cover of Rowling’s books sold in the United Kingdom, and on several translated versions of the book, the auction house said. It was not used for the U.S. edition of the book, which was sold under the title “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.”

The illustration first went up for auction at Sotheby’s in London in 2001, selling for about $106,000 in U.S. dollars, according to Sotheby’s.
