Opposition candidate Luis Abinader leads the polls with 20 percent of votes counted, as the Dominican Republic elects a new president and legislature

A local prepares to vote at a polling station during General Elections in Santo Domingo, on July 5, 2020 amid the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic.

But elsewhere, the voting appeared to progress smoothly, with few disruptions despite the extra virus precautions. Outgoing President Danilo Medina, who cannot seek another term under the country's constitution, was forced to impose a national lockdown, easing it only last week as parties made a final drive for votes.Abinader, a 52-year-old businessman, had to suspend his campaign after testing positive for the coronavirus, but recovered sufficiently to lead a closing election rally on Wednesday.

"Change is coming and the PLD is going," Abinader, who is considered a centrist, promised a crowd of hundreds of his supporters at a closing rally Wednesday. The country, which shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti, ranks 137th out of 180 countries on Transparency International's corruption index.

The pandemic has already hit polling by the Republic's 600,000 overseas voters — representing almost eight percent of the electoral roll.

Right after the Berkshire acquisition. The fools on the US east coast would rather import natural gas by ship from Trinidad in old single hull ship or from West Africa (a political horror show) then to use the cleaner fuel from Mid America.
