,” : Shelby Webb’s article on the difficulties of getting solar panels connected is just another example of the state’s failure to address our continuing utility problems. The same is true for backup gas generators. After the extended electrical outages following Hurricane Harvey and the deadly freeze of 2021, many people want to install solar panels or backup gas generators since they don’t trust the state to fix the problems. Surprise, surprise.

, David Lesar, can’t lead a corporation into the 21st century and expedite these approvals. Every death of a child or senior citizen in the next grid failure will be directly related to the incompetence and corruption of the state of Texas and CenterPoint Energy. How California avoided widespread blackouts during its heat wave when Texas couldn't during its freeze

,” : Ms. Webb accurately and clearly portrays differences in power systems between California and Texas. Having formerly lived in California, we experienced climate swings which included severe heat as well as droughts and fires. These events seem to have ratcheted up in the last decade. The existing infrastructure has been crumbling and the utility company has been negligent in their care of substations and transmission lines.

Our experience in Texas is similar in terms of extreme weather, unreliable power transmission, grid failure and the highest prices we have ever paid for electricity. Gov. Abbott and the others who oversee the power grid should take this opportunity to diversify power, repair current power plants and provide a means for renewables to support existing energy systems. The key to effective energy policy is a diversification of all sources and their sustainability of delivery.

The grid doesn’t have to be upgraded for solar panel owners to provide electricity to their own homes and their neighbors’ homes. However, some electric utilities, including mine, discourage rooftop solar panels by paying less for the electricity generated by solar panels than they charge for electricity from the grid. Electric utilities should be required by law to pay the same rate for rooftop solar panel electricity as they charge for electricity off the grid.
