Anybody remember that fellow named Merrick Garland? By Paul Waldman Paul Waldman Opinion writer covering politics Email Bio Follow Opinion writer March 18 at 3:23 PM As Democratic candidates for president seek to win the hearts of the primary electorate, they’re not just proposing ambitious policy ideas. They’re also trying to show that they envision a Democratic Party that’s tougher than the one that exists today.
Not everyone is on board, however. To see the kind of reaction the idea can get, James Hohmann reports from Concord, N.H., the colorful response one senator and potential candidate had to the idea: That’s a legitimate argument, which I’ll address in a moment. But it’s important to keep in mind that there is one and only one reason why we’re discussing this at all: Merrick Garland.
It was one of the most despicable official acts either party has undertaken in decades. And while McConnell still no doubt giggles in joy every time he thinks of it, it continues to fill Democrats with rage. We may find out before long. Consider the following scenario: Democrats take back the White House and the Senate in 2020. Then they eliminate the legislative filibuster, preventing the Republican minority from stymieing policy changes the majority passes. Then they pass the agenda that the new president ran on, including health-care reform, a $15 minimum wage, a Green New Deal and new guarantees of voting rights. After, that is, they’re done undoing Roe v.

Well, if I were Japanese,I'd be pretty nervous around democrats.
McC essentially did it with Merrill Garland.
Why do the Dems have to be nice..screw off...
The same reason gay marriage is here after being voted down by every state it was tried in. When the will of the people isn't acceptable, to the Dems.) the Dems. go around the people. Everything but what the country is supposed to be!
Because the democrats lost an election. Democrats no longer accept the results of elections they lose. And of course when an R president then adds 37 more justices they will all cry about how unfair it all is.
Pack the courts ✔ Lower voting age to 16 ✔ Eliminate electoral college ✔ Accuse Trump of violating norms
What goes around comes around. I have no problem.
Of course, Democrats wish to destroy The Republic.
Suddenly? We’ve been wanting this for years, since Garland’s horrid treatment by the GOP. Why is it when WP says “Dems” they only mean the corporate Dems, who are aging out of their plush jobs?
Not so much a justice system as realpolitik. The Republicans have always known this and acted accordingly. Blame the Constitution for setting up a situation that rewards corruption. Virtue doesn't get you far in politics. Courtpacking Republicans Democrats
I believe the WaPo Opinion author meant, 'Court Balancing.'
Suddenly?
Anything to stay in power.
FDR?
I will not pay a dollar to read your article.
No we can’t do that, the Supreme Court is too important to democracy! Who will replace their Democratic commitment to *checks notes* make sure anti-corruption laws are functionally non-existent?
Looks legal, smells legal, feels legal, but remains politics.
Because the Supreme Court is currently an undemocratic abomination stacked with justices appointed by presidents rejected by the electorate (trump, Bush) and because conservatives already did their own bit of Court packing when they refused to even consider any Obama nominee
They also want to get rid of the electoral college and change the voting age to 16. They’re like a child who wants to change the rules of a game because they lost.
[Denying Garland a vote] “was one of the most despicable official acts either party has undertaken in decades.” Democrats’ attempted high-tech lynching of Justice Thomas and bloated drunk Ted Kennedy’s smearing of Judge Bork were worse.
Because they're power-mad
This is a bad idea. And none of it will even matter unless the Senate confirmation process is completely revamped in tandem.
Some folks have been working for years to 'tilt' the system across the board. We DO need to find sensible ways to get the balance right again. No system is perfect, but every system can be corrupted. Challenges ahead without a doubt.
I guess Trump should just add two justices now or 20
Increasing the number of SCOTUS justices is appealing because the GOP has stolen two seats on the court.
Enjoy the ratio.
