Opinion: 'I do not doubt that U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents did all they could to try to save the life of Jakelin Caal Maquin, a 7-year-old girl who died in the custody of the United States,' says NPR's Scott Simon.

Blame Schumer + PELOSI , and Mexico for not stopping them . Always , they want to blame BORDER PATROL. Tug on the heart strings , but nobody had to die. Blame the man who accompanied the girl. Should have known better and stayed home. But noOo.

Scott Simon has entirely too sunny a worldview for an adult US citizen.

Says that some great people tried to save a little girl by flying her to a hospital after her reckless father endangered her.

So the organizer of the caravan is going to be held accountable?

Until you find out if the asylum seekers were given food and water when boarding the bus for an eight hour trip, your 'opinion' is irrelevant and ill timed. Do better and nprscottsimon nprs.

They probably did all they could to insure her death

Parents of child have the same responsibility to care for their children. I have family in El Salvador and they too are angry at the fact that people are making that trek with kids in hand, to put them in danger, of rape, kidnapping, and death.

The death of a 7 year old girl says nothing about this country. It says a lot about the adults in her life that put her in that position and the sick, creepy fake journalists who use her death to promote their agenda. NPR, we know what you are.

Oh,well, if the consul of the country they were fleeing says everything is okay then it must be so... 🤮

the news is edging towards showing images of a dead child at the border. they never show images of dead bodies unless it's to foster support for something. it worked in Europe twice now. they're going to use it here. watch.

What happened to Jakelin is awfully sad, that’s a fact. Also, had her father not attempted to bring her into the US illegally, she would most likely still be alive. No food or water in days, while walking in a desert is probably not something she did regularly back in Guatemala

the people encouraging illegal immigration are reponsible? Maybe soros ?

Its says their country was so bad they were willing to walk across a desert without food and water to try and get in.

Hillary Clinton could have changed Immegration laws. Everyone knew in 1997 that law would not work. So now American Congress incentivizes having child under your arm when you get caught. Elijah, Hillary, Ben, Chris change immigration law. Hundreds who die in desert never found.

The parents of that girl should be charged.

There is not of mind, nor imagination the life that was lost within customs. It is also unimaginable the parent that decide to leave bad situations and enter bad situations, to place their child in a deathful situation. Balance of blame.

I wish I thought so too but I don’t

I think dying of thirst in custody speaks for itself. I think withholding water from the dying speaks for itself. Even in a war a soldier would give a dying enemy a sip from his canteen. We are the bad guys here.

Criminals running the circus

Or what her death says about her dad. He's the one that's responsible for her being put in that situation.

I doubt. It takes a simple search on google to find videos of Border Patrol agents emptying water from caches in the desert meant for immigrants and refugees. This is not a good look, .

What a tragic mess this has gotten to be.

Running into a desert without water and food gets you dead.

Nazis raised their kids next to, and within the concentration camps. Single celled organisms can procreate; we should not use that as a test for someone's ability to show empathy and basic decency.

Wrong, NPR. You've whored yourselves out.

1 of my proudest days as an American was seeing people race towards towers on 911 2 help.I was proud 2 see the heart of my country handing out water& sandwiches. But this-this is my saddest day! They're VILE &SOULLESS.Does vandalizingHumanitarian Aid & her death make you great?

Scott, your statement was lovely in an unlovely time.

After a stressful and taxing trip a person illegally enters into your home bringing their ill and exhausted young child. Before you can help for the chid dies. You are saddened but are you responsible? Adults know: There are limits to growth...

ScottSimon Scott sounding like Fox News, a cancer in the heart of American society/Brutal US borders 'Flynn duped' by prosecutors'/Trump's lies are getting soggy in their 'pity me' variety/Truth is his enemy, brutal donors his befefactors

The death says a lot about our conscience

Taken very narrowly, nprscottsimon's statement here may be true. But individual agents and the agency as a whole made a series of decisions and judgments that cost this girl her life. Simon's statement lends moral ambiguity to a situation that is anything but.

Guatemala president: you were bribed to move your embassy to Jerusalem. It's clear you were just used

I have serious doubts. When one regards the Other as Less, immediately one's interest in their Wellbeing diminishes. ICE & Border Patrol are committed to keeping US 'pure' by excluding this Child and All others like her, By Whatever Means Necessary!!!

Build the wall.

Then start writing the way it should have been.. you created doubt.

I am sick of people making the US the bad guy. The father took her on a perilous trip. I do not believe for one minute they denied her water or food. They provided medical help the minute they knew she was sale. It is tragic.

Nice Polite Republicans strike again.

Scott needs to be reminded that if a small child dies while he is taking care of them and he hasn’t actively attempted to save their lives, it’s murder.

I’m glad Scott is free to air his opinion. He’s also free to apologize for saying it.

...they failed to take preventative measures while transporting minors which is NEGLIGENT

BULLSHIT LIES. I watched the video of the border patrolman emptying jugs of water left out for them in the desert. These men are as cruel as trump, mean, nasty kkk racist who should be charged for criminal activity. Fuck trump, fuck Kristen Nielsen and fuck ice twice.

Seriously?

If an US citizen put his child in back of a pickup truck, had an accident with the child dying, “media” would call for him to be charged with neglect or murder. A real “media” would ask where the mom is. But, rather, the “media” blames ppl trying to help illegals from themselves.

Build the WALL, tall, wide and foreboding!!!

Her father killed her, negligent homicide!!! Border patrol rescued them from the desert, but they never should have needed rescuing!! except her father violated American LAW!!

Now this is fake news! Nobody dies from dehydration unless nobody gives them food and water! WTF.

You sure about that

Why not?

If that’s the author’s opinion, it is misinformed. All you need to to is talk to people who have been in those facilities or media who have been there and talking to people who have been in those facilities.

National Propaganda Radio. I don't BCP is responsible. I absolve the family. This is all realDonaldTrump 's fault. New story. Same theme. NPR is nothing more then Democrat schill at this point. Want to hear fair news? Try VOANews

Operative word here is ‘could’. It’s very clear they are either incapable of very much or just not allowed to do very much that even slightly resembles treating people humanely.

So basically they did nothing! Didn’t someone notice that this child was sick?

yea is say COME HERE LEGALLY , you don't drag kids here illegally and jeopardize their lives F U NPR

Triage is never easy. A young child could be overlooked. I am more concerned about our lack of compassion

That’s not usually how killers act

Not all they could do or she would not have been in that situation. It is a horrible way to die and all for the lack of caring. Water, food and heat or cooling. Even people on death row have better care.

Really? Because I am quite certain they didn’t. I bet they don’t feel a shred of shame for their inhumanity. They’re amoral monsters who deserve to feel the same horrors they’re inflicting on these children and then some

Thank you nprscottsimon for your commonsense approach in the case of the death of the seven year old girl.

The PARENTS are to blame.

Opinion or not Scott Simon can’t be a representative voice of NPR. The organization ought to distance itself from this. And quickly.

Did they try water?

The doubt is present and glaring. This age of cruelty will have consequences. Anyone more concerned about blaming political opposition or protecting public image instead of preventing future deaths of children deserves no mercy under the law, man or any god.

They did shit. I have no faith in our institutions right now. They are doing what they are told with glee.

I do.

Your reporting is so blatantly irresponsible. NPR needs to remember that the public funds are the reason you exist.

The full story of our border situation is not being told to Americans. A few thousand refugees seeking asylum should not be allowed to change the DNA of our nation that once stood to embrace refugees from the entire world.

We can't even have a conversation because the left keeps changing the meaning of the words. They aren't migrants, nor asylum seekers, nor people wanting to create a better life. They want handouts.

They watched her die.

I do have doubts, even while I understand the difference between personal and systemic responsibility.

Do the parents not have any blame for thinking their daughter could cross the New Mexican desert?

Disgusting opinion trying to use the utter neglect and recklessness of a child's parent to attack the President who is discharging his first and most solemn duty to protect the US Border. Spare us your pathetic tropes. The girl's blood is solely on the hands of her father.

So kicking those gallon water jugs and pouring them empty is part of doing everything to protect humans looking to better their children's lives? Damn agents should be fired for doing such a thing. The man upstairs will seek revenge on these ASSHOLES.

Just because some agents have kids of their own, doesn’t mean they aren’t capable of carelessness, negligence or involuntary manslaughter. To say nothing of the instances of people being hurt or shot by agents.

What does it say about the media that they immediately pushed the implication, or outright claim, that this kid was killed by Border Patrol?

That’s your opinion and you are welcome to it. Until an honest investigation is done it’s guessing time

NPR Simon has no doubt Border Patrol did everything possible to save this child? Really? This is the same BP that dumped water caches left for migrants.

Change the law, require asylum seekers to go to a US Embassy in their home country, NOT a port of entry. Give then no reason to travel the dangerous route north..

Opinion: Everyone is entitled to theirs. Mine is that US Border Protection agents are fast becoming the closest thing this country has to the brownshirts or the SS.

Charge the parents.

This is the same tactics as the Syrian boy who washed up on Greece's shores. Make it firm illegal and impossible to enter. Then dumb shits won't harm their kids on the trek. Also it's probably not even his kid

I doubt it. It may have been lack of training but they did not do all they could have.

Interesting how the naysayers don't consider that this girl was most likely in a near fatal condition well before she crossed the boarder. The parents made a poor decision to travel 100s of miles w/o sufficient provisions for a child! Fail FAIRImmigration

😂 nice opinion of course🇬🇹she would have been visible in distress if it took 8 hours to DIE. So them doing all they could do-needs to be looked at harshly. And why would the dad say anything negative?! I’m sure he is scared & in shock. Do they triage the people they SAVE?✊🏽🇬🇹

The parents and only the parents are responsible for this child’s death

It says were the greatest country on this green earth. People will drag their dying children here for a chance to enter illegally.

No mention that the parents did not give the child food or water for 7 days -

Scott, you are wrong. This is what they want. Why else dump out life saving water along border crossings? They want the crossing to be as dangerous as it can be. Every death is an individual tragedy but celebrated overall as a victory in sending the message, 'don't even try it.'

These are the same people who throw kids in cages right?

These are the same guys that empty the water bottles in the desert, right? All they could indeed.

unacceptable.. Patriotic Americans need to stand and demand how this happened here, and hold the responsible party(s) accountable.

The agents who interacted with this girl and her father and did not offer food, water or medical assistance for the eight hours she was in their custody are directly responsible for her death.

There's a hill. I wonder if Steve McQueen could jump that fence on a bike.

Our borders are heavily funded staffed first response team and should therefore be prepared to do basic first aid and triage which includes IMMEDIATE assessment. Unfortunately, incompetent first response more often results in death of the most vulnerable... children.

Yes, I'm so sure the goons that routinely destroy food and water left for immigrants and refugees tried *so hard* to save her life. They tried so hard, in fact, that they failed to get her medical care for 8+ hours, and only did so once she began having seizures.

When you can find video of CBP offices dumping water jugs meant to save people like Jakelin as an accepted practice then the CBP is complicit in her death.

No one should bring.a child to walk hundreds of miles no food or water. This falls in the people who brought her here.

The record does not support the opinion.

Wrong

Clearly they didn’t if she’s dead, Scott. Honestly NPR been doing too much trying to make this administration seem human.

Stop encouraging illegal immigration...people die when Democrats get their cheap housemaids and gardeners...

Not even the poorest of the poor PARENTS will do to their children what those parents have been doing:Put them on top of rail cars, etc.

Good opinion piece. I find it ridiculous that people think that 4 agents confronted by 163 migrants in the middle of the night are supposed to be able to diagnose and treat the girl in a more timely manner, despite the fact her father did not report her as being ill.

It says that the girl didn’t get sick overnight &she didn’t get help until she reached the also shows the irresponsibility of parents

Other than refrain from dumping out caches of water along the border to keep her from going into hypovolemic shock in the first place.

Obviously they didn't.

Parents drag her through hell without food or water Father signs a form claiming she's 'in good health' when taken in by BP Girl starts showing signs of severe dehydration, BP airlifts her to a hospital & they do all they can to save her life Media: 'USA IS TO BLAME!'

Prolife , right? Unless you are rich and white! A National disgrace!!!! I am embarrassed by the leaders of this Country!!!

We used to be “the last best hope on earth”. But that evaporated when the highly corrupt Mr. Trump assumed the presidency and brought the real swamp with him to Washington.

Now to everybody reading this statement please take note it is an opinion believe it or not others a few million others look upon the situation is that being that people that are illegals that are trying to migrate here already know what they're getting into, long before coming.

This admin has made people of COLOR who are seeking asylum or to immigrate, out to be criminals or a threat to this country. The only threat is the traitors in the white house and their supporters.

NPR's Scott Simon perhaps has an interest in this bridge I have for sale?

I don’t understand how you come to your opinion. There is little humanity in it.

They did nothing to prevent the situation, and nice the child was seizing it was too late.

He’s wrong.

After their inaction and neglect doomed her, of course.

This is a bad take. It will be used at your trial during Nuremberg 2

that's a little better, you put the more likely answer in the headline, then put the calumny in the story 'Was a 7-year-old girl who had been taken in from the desert not given water or food for the eight hours she was in U.S. custody? '

the dictionary entry for 'complicit' brought me here.

The Republican culture of cruelty is flourishing...ripping families apart, ripping healthcare away from millions..standing shoulder to shoulder with a corrupt crime family...Merry Christmas America.

What if the system is so deliberately broken that it overwhelms the efforts of any one or several individuals to ameliorate the damage it causes?

They're crossing the border and infecting people. There's a pandemic situation the CDC dosen't want people to know about.

How long is the process that they surrendered and then placed on the bus? How long was the bus ride? I get that she was already exhausted without nutrition or water but did no one give a damn during the process? I have more questions on what the process was and time line.

Opinion: this is not the U.S. fault or responsibility. We do not care enough for our own citizens, our veterans, our homeless. These people coming here should matter less than U.S. Citizens. The U.S. is not the world's sanctuary or police force. We need to care for our own FIRST.

Sure, except for giving her water or prompt medical attention.

Ask shit questions, get shit answers.

I don't. They should have put her on a medi-vac to El Paso or Tucson immediately upon seeing her in distress and her temperature being 105+. No they did NOT do enough by half.

Yeah. I also have no doubt that the people who dump out cans of water in the desert and rip toddlers out of their mothers’ arms did absolutely everything they could to save this child’s life.

I do. Look at the video of CBP dumping out water left for refugees. They are directly responsible for her death.

Once again, NPR bends over backward to normalize this administration. I wish my donations to support their arts coverage didn’t support BS like this.
