validates what opponents feared would happen — in the wake of the recall, California judges became far more punitive in sentencing, and not just for sex offenses and privileged defendants. According to study authors Sanford C. Gordon and Sidak Yntiso, in the six weeks following the announcement of the campaign to recall Judge Persky there was a 30% increase in sentences across the state.

What we have here is indeed a failure of imagination: the writer's failure to imagine that harsher sentences imposed in recent years might in fact be the fault of the judges who imposed them and/or the criminals convicted, not the citizens protesting injustice she acknowledges.
Why are we still talking about this case? Why not instead bring to light the innumerable cases of injustice against people of color? This documentary itself attests to white privilege.
Persky was recalled because his reason for that idiot sentence had nothing to do with social justice or justice for the victim. It was crafted entirely to minimally affect a member of his own class (male, white, economically privileged) who raped a woman who was asking for it.
No
He was black he would have got 40 years and you never would have weighed in on this.
The judge’s sentence of Turner and the kid gloves with which he treated him were completely unacceptable. It totally reaffirmed affluent white male privilege. If his recall caused other judges to rethink how they sentence sexual offenders, especially privileged ones, that’s good!
Punishing a judge for perpetuating injustice scared other judges into erring on the side of longer sentences, itself an injustice, and your answer is, what? Nothing, it seems like, just a question. If you don't have an alternative it's hard to criticize what people actually do.
Really blaming making the correct decision for all the bad that followed? I see this as evidence the entire system needs to be re-worked. I'd rather applaud this good first step than attack it because the people in that broken system misunderstood the problem.
