Disgruntled parents, school board acrimony, and simmering racial tensions—these are the reactions to social activists who are trying to remake public education to their liking. For an older generation, however, this moment also recalls the busing wars of a half-century ago, a history no one should want to repeat.

Court-ordered busing of schoolchildren began in the South in the early 1970s, and the objective was to achieve more racial balance in public schools. The practice was controversial in part because the Civil Rights Act of 1964 stated explicitly that children must be assigned to schools “without regard to their race” and that desegregation did not require students to be placed in schools “to overcome racial imbalance.

opinion jasonrileywsj Why does the GOP continue to privatize education? Steal state funding for public schools and funnel it to private, well funded education programs? Strangle working class families and take away any form economic advantage like a complete education, who still won’t serve Karen

opinion jasonrileywsj What nonsense is this?

opinion jasonrileywsj The social activists are the white supremacists who don't want their children to learn about the evils of racism, of slavery, of Jim Crow, the evils that racists have done and are still doing in this nation. What a shame that reposts the dishonesty of opinion.

McConnell has joined the partisan parade against the Justice Dept.'s plan to protect school boards from threats and intimidation campaigns. Here's hoping the DOJ focuses more on public safety than on partisan pushback. MaddowBlog Can't someone shove McConnell back into his shell and flip him on his back for a bit? Maybe that would stop him from screwing things up for a while. MaddowBlog Why is Mitch McConnell so defiant and oppositional? MaddowBlog I like how this image makes his hideous jowl appear to continue down his chest like a turkey. (or a satanic underworld creature, you pick)
